Parent Chapter – New York City – For Members Only

About

Founded: 1890

History: The Colonial Dames originated in New York. These founding members became known as the Parent Chapter as women in other cities organized into their own chapters.

Officers: The Parent Chapter does not have a dedicated board. The Society’s Board of Managers provides oversight and approves its membership. An informal group, the Parent Chapter Fellowship Committee, plans activities for our members.

Chapter Project: The chapter is dedicated to the preservation and maintenance of The Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden, part of the Society’s headquarters. As the CDA’s local members, we are active as volunteers, advisors, and fundraisers. The museum is accredited by the AAM and interpreted as it would have appeared in the 1830s, when the building served as a fashionable day resort near New York City.

Events:

  • An Annual Holiday Tea Dance is held in early December for members and guests.
  • A Fall Benefit is held each year to raise funds for the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden.
  • The Membership Committee holds several receptions each year for candidates and their sponsors, prospective candidates, new members, and Board members.
  • The chapter serves as host to the Society’s Annual Meeting and holds a garden party on the Sunday afternoon of the Annual Meeting weekend.

10.12.2018 – A Day at The New York Botanical Garden

A dozen members of the Garden Committee and the Parent Chapter spent a perfect October day at The New York Botanical Garden on October 12. They began with a private showing in the archives of materials about Bertrand Farr, the notable iris hybridizer and nurseryman of the early twentieth century. The visit was enriched by the presence of Lori Galletti, the collector who researched Mr. Farr and donated these materials to the archives, and her mother, an experienced collector in her own right. The Gallettis joined the Dames for lunch, where Lori gave an additional talk about her experience building the collection, then showed photographs of some of the named irises developed by Mr. Farr. Lori has obtained root stock of these plants and now grows them in her own garden in Pennsylvania.

The group also viewed the Georgia O’Keeffe exhibit at the NYGB library, then ended the day with a guided tram tour of the grounds and an enthusiastic visit to the gift shop.
