About

Founded: 1928
Chapter History: Chapter VIII was chartered in Dallas, Texas April 28, 1928. On December 17, 1948 the Chapter issued an amended charter and was based in Houston, Texas. The Chapter has been active in supporting the projects and restorations of the Parent Society while carrying on worthwhile State projects.  Our President 1953-1956, Mrs. C.L. Farquharson, wrote the Salute to the Colonial Dames Banner. It has been a part of our opening ritual since that time.

Historic Preservation & Education: The Special Projects of Chapter VIII have been significant to the Houston community and the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum and Gardens.  The Projects vary widely ranging from discovering two hidden artifacts, to publishing a chapter history for the 50th anniversary, to adorning the foyer of the newly opened replica of Independence Hall in Houston, to restoring an Anglican Church cemetery in St. Kitts and providing items for the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum.Chapter VIII’s current project is to support the nonprofit organization– VALUES THROUGH HISTORY – in the efforts to convert its award winning Why America is Free curriculum to a very high quality digital/online delivery version which includes a 6 hour segmented, on demand, highly interactive teacher-training series.

In 1979 Chapter VIII member Elizabeth Warham Brewster established the Abbie Frank Smith scholarship to honor her sister.  Since 1979, Chapter VIII has distributed 187 scholarships totaling over $300,000.
