About
Founded: 1982
Chapter History: Chapter XX – Los Angeles, California, The Colonial Dames of America was organized April 20,1982. The Chapter has had a long history prior to its official organization. The California Society was established in 1902 as Chapter V in San Francisco. Women from around the State were members of Chapter V. Then in 1929 an Auxiliary of the San Francisco Chapter was established in Southern California. The Auxiliary continued until 1982 when the full-fledged Chapter was organized as Chapter XX. The Chapter’s early projects were in support of the Boys Community Lodge, a place for runaway boys and the Naval Hospital in San Diego. From the beginning the Chapter has supported The Parent Chapter’s Book Awards Committee, its Scholarship Fund and the Mount Vernon Hotel & Garden Museum as well as its restoration projects at the Museum. In recent years the Chapter has donated to The Parent Chapter’s restoration projects at MVH&GM and to the fund for the restoration of the North Gates at Jamestown. Currently the Chapter donated to the MVHM &G Anniversaries Campaign and the traditional Society activities. Also, in the past two years donations have been to the Lahaina Restoration Foundation in Hawaii to help re-build the historic buildings which were lost in the Lahaina fires.
Historic Preservation & Education: The Chapter has had a practice of historic, educational and informational speakers and programs at each meeting which the Chapter does at every opportunity. The meetings are held the first Friday of the months of February, May, October and December at a favorite Los Angeles area restaurant. For information, please contact Penny Adams-O’Neill at
